The incessant rain that started pouring down from 08.01.2011 in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts resulted in a server flood situation adversely affecting the life of hundreds of thousand of people who were struggling to recover from the effects of the prolonged civil war of the past three decades.
A total number of 347,596 persons from 92,173 families in the Batticaloa district and 444,863 persons from 116,944 families in the Ampara district, their Livelihood activities and a large acreage of cultivated paddy fields were severely affected.
The unprecedented flood waters compelled these unfortunate people to leave their homes rendering them completely displaced and seeking refuge either at welfare centres or at relatives homes.
The crying need and the urgency of the crisis warranted Caritas EHED to get itself immediate fully involved to bring relief to the suffering people.
The following pages reflect the quantum of the immediate relief assistance provided by Caritas EHED to the affected people in the different Divisional Secretariats in both the Ampara and Batticaloa districts. The relief programme is ongoing and hence the pages will be updated from time to time. [ An Urgent Appeal ]
